battle at sea

I've made it a goal to work on my environments, storytelling, and compostition this summer.  I did this for a CGhub challenge but I'm too ashamed of it to post it over there.

Gone Fishin'

3.5 hour still life done in my apartment.  My goal was quick and confident brush stokes.  I think I suceeded in some areas of the painting.  The baitcaster may have been a little too complex for this exercise but hey it was fun!  I am still having a rough time getting intense highlights with oils.  Oils on canvas 8 X 10

Costumes

This dude was a sketch I did a little while back.  I liked him so I wanted to paint him.  After going through the painting process I realized I didn't really like his outfit.  So I did a few quick concepts to see if I could come up with something different a more interesting.

Gestures

School's out for the summer so I cleaned out my drawers...here are some gesture sketches from the mornings.  They are done with pencils, pens, markers, whatever was handy at the time really.  I think I prefer markers for the quick ones. All range from 30 seconds to two minutes.

These were done a few months back for a scholarship with Sony Online Entertainment.  We had to develop a character and an environment that would fit into the Everquest 2 world.  I have never played EQ but I figured I would give it a try anyways.  I didn't win but I was notified of being a semi-finalist.  Congratulations to this years winner!

I figured I would try a creature challenge on CGhub.  The prompt was greek mythological creatures.  We were supposed to give them an up to date facelift.  I liked where it was going at first then became more bored with it as the time went on.  I really should have put something in there for scale....

Speedy

A new painting... not as "finished" as my others.  It was an exercise turning a color photo reference into a black and white painting.  (We don't use black at our school so there is some color in there)

Here are some plein air painting recently done.  The one with the tower is a few weeks old and the other just dried.  Plein air painting is really fun but also very difficult.  I still have a long way to go before I can be pround of em'.  Getting contrast is probably the hardest part for me.

Thumbnails

Composing images in general is a real challenge for me so I sat down tonight and did some rough thumbnails to try and solve some problems I'm having.  Didn't get much accomplished...I have a hard time getting into and "environment" mindset.  I'm hoping doing lots of these quick thumbnails will eventually help me get over this hurdle.  Or maybe I'll refine them a little more...I don't know.

3CH

This is a rough sketch from a 3CH topic for our school blog.  I 'll probably just shit can this.  My original idea was something dynamic and interesting... and I pump out this headshot :(  I'm going to go back and thumbnail some ideas and hopefully learn something about composing an interesting illustration.
