Ladys

Haven't been to life drawing in a while so I just searched the internet for some pics to draw from.  About 20 mins a piece.  I need to go back and fix a few things...

Vehicles

Did these for the school blog.  The prompt was something ID since we will be starting Industrial Design this year.  Never draw cars or much of anything with hard surfaces so it's something I really need to do more of.

thumbnails

Here are some quick composition thumbs I have done today.  My next traditional painting for school is going to be entirely up to me so I was just tossing around ideas.  So far, I like the bottom two...

more worky

Kinda screwed up the colors on the big boy so I just put them together in grayscale.

Alien (heavy type) line

Here another line sketch of an alien from the same race/clan as the one before.  He is the "heavy" type, more bulky and slow moving but extremely powerful.  I am doing this because I want to practice designing multiple characters that look like they fit into the same species/world.  I would imagine this is important in the industry. :)

Still working on environments....

Stuff

With these I am trying to get the general values, mood, and composition established within a certain time frame (1 1/2 hours).  They are rough but I think I might be learning something.

Fire castles or something

Quick environment done tonight

Alien line/color

Okay so I wasn't really happy with the last post of this guy.  I feel too much was indicated and I wanted to really understand what he looked like and how his legs functioned.  So I tried a different technique using a line drawing.   This one is better and pretty quick in terms of time to complete.  Let me know what you think.  Thanks for looking!

Alien grayscale

Tried to come up with an interesting design for the alien sketch I did.  I like the idea of him having a mechanical lower body.  I plan on coloring this one.  thanks for looking!

I've been neglecting this thing for a while so I put a little more work into it tonight.  C & C always welcome!

Flamer paint WIP

I really failed the first couple times I painted this guy.  So I wanted to go back and give it another shot this time more painterly.  Probably still spending too much time in certain areas but I wanted the head to be a little more detailed than other parts of his body.  I am about an hour in and this is as far as I've gotten.  I'm going to try bigger blocker strokes for the rest of him so hopefully it won't take much longer.  I really want to get him painted in no more than 2 - 3 hours.

started working on this tonight... It's some form gate to another world or dimension.  The peeps walking towards are in a trance, sort of being sucked in.

battle at sea adjustments

I posted the first version of this a week or so ago.  This weekend I started watching some of Feng Zhu's videos and realized I don't pay enough attention to values; which is absolutely ridiculous...  I guess I have such a hard time with composition and story I forget about the basics.  The tones are much better in this version but they still could be better.  Oh well time for sleepy, I'm really glad I realized I was making these mistakes.

He's a flamer

I attended a summer concept art workshop last week with instructor Rolf Mohr.  We learned a great process of getting our character ideas quickly on paper.  First we started with thumbnails to get a general look and feel of our character.  Then, we took that a little further with some rough sketches.  Basically trying to get the characters forms to read correctly.  Rolf really emphasized keeping our sketches loose a quick; it was more about the design of the character and less of a piece of artwork.  Finally we did a clean line drawing over our sketch to then start painting.

misc.

Here's a couple random environment sketches I found hidden in one of my folders.  The waterfall one was going to be for a scholarship then I skrapped it for another idea and the forest is just a sketch. Lastly the volcano cathedral was done for my school blog a ways back.  Thanks for looking!

battle at sea

I've made it a goal to work on my environments, storytelling, and compostition this summer.  I did this for a CGhub challenge but I'm too ashamed of it to post it over there.

Gone Fishin'

3.5 hour still life done in my apartment.  My goal was quick and confident brush stokes.  I think I suceeded in some areas of the painting.  The baitcaster may have been a little too complex for this exercise but hey it was fun!  I am still having a rough time getting intense highlights with oils.  Oils on canvas 8 X 10

Costumes

This dude was a sketch I did a little while back.  I liked him so I wanted to paint him.  After going through the painting process I realized I didn't really like his outfit.  So I did a few quick concepts to see if I could come up with something different a more interesting.

sketches

Here are some of the faces done this year at school.  I still need a lot of wrench time to get these to look right.  I think they were 3 - 5 minutes.  The other page is just some random doodles. Thanks for looking!

Gestures

School's out for the summer so I cleaned out my drawers...here are some gesture sketches from the mornings.  They are done with pencils, pens, markers, whatever was handy at the time really.  I think I prefer markers for the quick ones. All range from 30 seconds to two minutes.
