I attended a summer concept art workshop last week with instructor Rolf Mohr. We learned a great process of getting our character ideas quickly on paper. First we started with thumbnails to get a general look and feel of our character. Then, we took that a little further with some rough sketches. Basically trying to get the characters forms to read correctly. Rolf really emphasized keeping our sketches loose a quick; it was more about the design of the character and less of a piece of artwork. Finally we did a clean line drawing over our sketch to then start painting.

misc.
Here's a couple random environment sketches I found hidden in one of my folders. The waterfall one was going to be for a scholarship then I skrapped it for another idea and the forest is just a sketch. Lastly the volcano cathedral was done for my school blog a ways back. Thanks for looking!

battle at sea
I've made it a goal to work on my environments, storytelling, and compostition this summer. I did this for a CGhub challenge but I'm too ashamed of it to post it over there.

Gone Fishin'
3.5 hour still life done in my apartment. My goal was quick and confident brush stokes. I think I suceeded in some areas of the painting. The baitcaster may have been a little too complex for this exercise but hey it was fun! I am still having a rough time getting intense highlights with oils. Oils on canvas 8 X 10

Costumes
This dude was a sketch I did a little while back. I liked him so I wanted to paint him. After going through the painting process I realized I didn't really like his outfit. So I did a few quick concepts to see if I could come up with something different a more interesting.

sketches
Here are some of the faces done this year at school. I still need a lot of wrench time to get these to look right. I think they were 3 - 5 minutes. The other page is just some random doodles. Thanks for looking!

Gestures
School's out for the summer so I cleaned out my drawers...here are some gesture sketches from the mornings. They are done with pencils, pens, markers, whatever was handy at the time really. I think I prefer markers for the quick ones. All range from 30 seconds to two minutes.
